Winter Snow Removal

A snow event is an accumulation of at least 5 inches of snow.  When there is a snow event, City crews will begin plowing City streets.  Priority streets will be plowed first and then secondary streets.

Priority streets are:

Steuben, Oak, South Maple, Humboldt, and Ash.  All other streets are considered secondary.  During heavy snowfall events, crews may have to re-plow priority streets before plowing secondary streets.  Some streets may be closed during a snow event for the safety of the public and work crews.

Residents should expect snow plows to create berms at the road’s edge and be aware that those berms may block driveways. The snowplow operators will try to avoid creating large berms but it is not possible for City crews to clear driveway openings and still plow all of the City’s streets in a timely manner. With this in mind, the City asks that residents be prepared to clear their own driveways after the streets have been plowed, especially following heavy snow storms.

Please assist the Public Works crew in keeping the streets clear!

Avoid Parking on the Street

Where possible move vehicles off the street to enable public works crews to work safely and efficiently in clearing the streets.

Even/Odd Parking on the Street

"Even/Odd" parking is in place to allow snowplows to clear the entire width of city streets, from curb to curb, during and immediately following snow events.  By switching the side on which cars are parked each day, plows can reach areas previously blocked by parked cars.

  • On even numbered days (ex. December 20th), cars will be required to park on the east side of the street (for north/south streets) or on the south side of the street (for west/east streets).
  • On odd numbered days (ex. December 21st), cars will be required to park on the west side of the street (for north/south streets) or on the north side of the street (for west/east streets).

Please continue to move vehicles on subsequent days until the snow event is over and the driving lanes are clear of snow.

Special Situations:

When City crews are aware of special situations, such as elderly or physically-challenged residents, they will try to help clear those driveways as time allows. The City also encourages people to give a helping hand and clear driveways or sidewalks for neighbors who are physically unable to do so for themselves.
