Avoid Scams

Common scams include:

  • A call saying that money is owed to the IRS.

  • A call saying that a prize has been won, and to claim the prize a small sum of money must be sent to the caller.

  • A caller claiming to work for Microsoft, asking for personal information for a security update.

  • A check received in the mail, with instructions to cash it and send a small fee back to the sender.

  • A call asking for money to bail the scammer's family member or friend out of jail.

Never give out personal information, address, credit card or bank information, and never send money or cash a check. Turn it over to the police. If you have questions or concerns regarding any scam, please contact the police department at (509) 493-1177.
